Best Friends.

On fathers day Christopher snuggled with his Daddy on the couch and watched cartoons in the morning.  He told his Daddy he was his "Best Friend".  So cute, priceless fathers day gift.

Does he really get the concept of friends?  I wonder.

Yesterday we attended a after school years end picnic at the lake.  Many of his classmates were there.  There was lots to do, swim, jump from the dock, dig in the sands, try and catch little fish with buckets and nets, playground, ice cream and the list goes on and on.  So it may have all just been to big a situation for him and he retreated into "Doing his own thing" Happy and content to be alone.

He has overcome so many obstacles this year - push through so many goals for milestones that sometimes I really do forget that he is different.  So when we are in situations like this I find myself sad again.  And worried for him.  He had a great time yesterday.  He occasionally did interact with others but not in a friend sort of way.  More in a side by side way.  It was a great afternoon, he followed all my direction well, when it was time to eat he came to the car with me and sat to eat, when he had his ice cream he sat on the bench and when he wanted a spoon for his ice cream cone he went to the window by himself and ask for a spoon please.  All and all I am grateful for the ease that we can move through out a day with routine and reasonable expectations for how we do things.  Still it is adventures or outings like these that my heart aches a bit for him.  I hope that he will someday know what it is like to have a friend other than the trusted adults/brother in his life.
